Self Care: Dry Skin Brushing
By Nancy Valdes, CCT
One of my favorite ways to support liver function is by Dry Skin Brushing at least every other day. By exfoliating the skin with a firm bristle skin brush you allow the skin to breathe, promoting lymphatic drainage, stimulating the hormone and oil producing glands, increasing cell renewal, stimulating circulation, tightening the skin, preventing premature aging, improving the function of the nervous system and so much more. The skin is the largest and most important organ of the body and is responsible for 1/4 of the body's detoxification every day. The skin also receives 1/3 of all the blood that circulates in the body. The skins' primary functions include respiration, excretion, blood and lymph circulation, immunity and conduction of Chi energy.
The best brush that I've come across is the "Tampico" dry skin brush from "Yerba Prima". It comes with a long removable handle so you may brush your back and reach areas that are hard to reach. The proper technique to brush the skin, is while dry, before showering or bathing. Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken, such as rashes, wounds, cuts and infections. And never brush skin affected by poison oak or poison ivy. Apply light strokes over and around the breasts and do not brush the nipples. Use light pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet.
Start with the soles of the feet and work your way up to the ankles and calves with about 3 to 5 strokes on each section of skin. Move up to the thighs, buttocks, torso, then brush arms from hands to elbows, then elbows to shoulders. Use the dry skin brush with the handle to reach your back and always brush towards the heart. Afterwards, take a warm shower with soap which is followed by a cool rinse at the end, to further stimulate blood circulation. Please wash your brush at least once a week with soap and water and allow to air dry.
PS One of the best perks of dry skin brushing is having the silkiest skin everyone wants to touch! I receive compliments about my skin, almost daily. No more bumps on the back of the arms and no more uneven skin tone! An easy and inexpensive way to get all these benefits from just brushing your skin.
