A simple way to build discipline

Discipline kinda sucks because we understand it to be hard, and difficult, and impossible to maintain unless one is an athlete training for the Olympics. Because nobody taught us what the true essence of discipline is: to create a little bit of structure, so we can have more freedom.

What if we replace the word “discipline” with “commitment”, or “dedication”, or “a promise to Self”. What if rather than approaching it with fear we open up to it, and become attached to it’s magic one little baby step at a time. What if we understand that consistency and repetition unlock your intuition.

So what if - just for today - you promise to do that one little thing that will lead to another, and promise it each day, again, and again, and again. Like one of my favorite teachers, Allan Watts once said “Bones are to muscle, just like structure is to wiggles (joy)”.

Creating a sustainable daily routine is part of  The Journey curriculum. Here’s a simple journaling prompt I give students as a Step 1 to setting intentions. I recommend writing pen to paper, first thing in the morning or before bed: What do you want more of? What do you want less of?
